Alexander Italianer, a Dutch national, will present his view of where the European Union is heading in the immediate and mid-term future. He will do this from his unique perspective of Secretary-General of the European Commission from 2015 until 28/2/2018. This position as the most senior "eurocrat" within the European Commission has placed him within the heart of European decision-making during a period that has seen seismic changes to the EU and its partners.

Alexander Italianer has been Secretary-General of the European Commission since 2015.
Mr. Italianer joined the European Commission in 1985 as Administrator in the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs. From 1995 to 1999 he was member of the Cabinet of President Jacques Santer. In 1999 he was appointed Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Verheugen responsible for Enlargement. After three years as Director of International Economic and Financial Affairs (2002-2004), he became Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Pavel Telička, associated to Commissioner Byrne in the Health and Consumer portfolio, and Deputy Head of Cabinet of President José Manuel Barroso. He has since been Deputy Secretary-General of the European Commission since 2006 and Director-General for Competition Policy before being appointed Secretary-General in 2015.
Before joining the European Commission, Mr. Italianer was a research associate on the Economics Faculty at the Catholic University of Leuven.
Mr. Italianer holds a master's degree in econometrics and a PhD in economics (cum laude) from the University of Groningen.
